Coppi

I had a phone call from Doni Coppi’s export manager in 2019 asking me if I was interested in a presentation of their wines. I answered cautiusly “maybe!” I had been looking for a high quality Primitivo for a number of years since my favorite “Mother Zin” had changed hands and was no longer available to me. And nothing else reached the quality I always want to find.

Coppi sent me samples of everything they make and I wanted all of them! I restrained myself of course and started with their selection of 3 of their Primitivi – Siniscalco, Don Antonio and Senatore. Plus an amazing Negroamaro called Pellirosso. Not long afterwards I added their sparkling Negroamaro (who knew) and Aleatico and Falanghina, both varietals associated with other territories but also very much indigenous to Colli di Gioia – the heart of their territory.

The family has been involved with all levels of viticulture for over 100 years which led to the purchase of their current property 40+ years ago started by Doni’s wonderful father, known to everyone as Don Antonio (recently passed away very abruptly, may he rest in peace).

They are a much larger winery that any other property that I’ve collaborated with over the years. But very much with same hands on passion for their soil first, then the vines, the grapes and the wines.

And very much taking every relationship with the same dedication. When I first met Doni at the winery 3 years ago the first thing he said to me was “ thank you for everything you do as our partner in Illinois. We appreicate you so much.” A match made in beautiful vineyards by people I want to spend as much time with as possible.
