DECAPO WINERY

Renata Bonacina, Christina Sartor and Giovanni Sartor

It’s a very funny thing how people I need to find turn up at the critical moment and it happened with Renata.

I had worked for a very long time with a family producer of Barbera D’Asti and Moscato D’Asti and all of a sudden they weren’t there any more. I didn’t want to be without these two very classic and recognized wines of Piemonte but quality is essential. So I contacted the person who connected me with my wonderful producer Tenute Bosco. And he immediately recommended that I meet Renata. And it’s been a whirl wine wind relationship ever since.

As Renata tells it…

In the early nineties, after our daughter Cristina was born, my husband Giovanni and I decided  to move away from the city and search for a house in the Langhe.  My  Mom was from Piemonte and I mostly grew up there. We found  our place in  Castiglione Tinella , at Cà  ed Balos  in  1998.

Cà ed Balos is an aged farmstead surrounded by  vineyards with an outstanding view of the Alps , in  the core zone for the production of Moscato d’Asti.  We refurbished the old farm in the nineties keeping the original structure, style and building materials. And we definitely wanted to cultivate the vines next to the house. I followed up with extensive studies on every side of it from the ground to the glass. And grow it did!

The first Moscato d’Asti was produced in 2008: 3000 bottles made from a selection of our grapes, based on terroir, exposition and aromatic bouquet. For the next 20 years we built on that adding new varietals and better and better technique. And then in May  2017,  I took over DACAPO   a winery  based  in   Monferrato. DACAPO was founded in  1997  out of  an old  farmhouse located in Agliano Terme,  which is among  the  best  area for Barbera  d’Asti  ‘ crus ‘of  Piemonte.

My vineyards  are  cultivated  in a natural  way, without  fertilizer and  forced growing, with  low yield per hectare, thus  protecting the  fruit of  nature picked up  in the harvest. In these twenty  years besides the  Barbera d’Asti  DOCG,   new   wines  have  been added,  Barbera d’Asti Superiore Valrionda,  Nizza  DOCG,   and  three  other  native  wine  varieties, Grignolino d’Asti DOC, Ruchè  di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG  and  Monferrato  Nebbiolo DOC.

My main desire is to deliver value to our customers, wrapping them in a unique tasting experience satisfying the most demanding palates and those who care most about sustainability of the environment and their health. Beverly says: very down to earth hands first; to taste is to believe.

DACAPO / CA ED BALOS  PIEMONTE Nizza, Monferrato
Barbera D’Asti Sansebastian Overdelivering in quality; aged in large casks. Bright ruby red, elegant, lovely berry flavors; pairs with all your everyday foods.
Barbera D’Asti Superiore Valrionda Big barrel aging for perfect balance; rich, elegant, long finish. Pairs well with “saucey” meats, risotto, aged cheeses
Grignolino “Renard” Grignolino is a very rare grape because of the high number of seeds per berry. Bright, vibrant wine but with complex flavors and unexpected tannin.
Monferrato Rosso Rubar (Nebbiolo) Wonderful everyday classic Nebbiolo flavors. Large cask aging gives elegance, softer tannins, spicy nose, hints of ripe fruit, fig and plum.
Ruche di Castagnole “Majoli” A long time favorite of mine because it’s really difficult to grow and to make good wine– Dacapo did it! So tasty!
Ca Ed Balos Moscato D’Asti Tradition of dancing after harvest delivered the name “House of the Naughty” to the winery. Moscato to make you happy, not too sweet, just right tart finish. No matter what anyone says I taste apple!
