La Mesma

Francesca (winemaker), Paola (export) and Anna (finance) Rosina

I first heard about La Mesma from Anna Paola Giacobazzi of Cantina della Volta. They were both at Tre Bicchieri and Anna Paola told me I should try their wines. Paola Rosina was showing her Tre Bicchieri “riserva” along with her classic method sparkling and the INDI.

Gavi is one of those wines I lumped into the basket of “generic” wines and I always found Arneis a more interesting white wine. What do you expect when I work with Malvira!

However these Gavi’s were different from any that I tasted previously and totally broke the mold of my prejudice. First of all they are made only in stainless steel, cement vats and in the bottle for aging. Second they are very vineyard specific and thus very distinctive. Third they are delicious! And I have to admit the fact that the winery is owned and run by the three sisters exerted a strong pull as well.

They do not use fertilizers or pesticides but have a planting systems which uses legumes buried during flowering between the vines. It helps improve the vegetative cycle of the vine without harming the environment. They are also using their pruned canes for biomass fuel.

I had the chance to visit the winery in April in the pouring rain which precluded a walk through the vineyards (I’m a wimp) and it’s a beautiful property even in the rain. I look forward to returning the next time I’m in Italy. The name La Mesma refers to a mountain close to the winery which they believe might have been named centuries ago by Spanish immigrants. La Misma in Spanish means “the same” so maybe the mountain was the same as one back home. It’s a speculation.
